Testimonies of Collateral Damage by Megan's Laws

Indiana Wife frustrated, angered, scared, bitter, but hopeful.

Hi, my name is Valerie and my husband's name is Dan. Dan is a RSO. He served probation time 19 years ago for L&L with his daughter who was under 12. He moved here 1 year ago and he did not have to register because the offense was over 10 years ago. Indiana changed their registration laws last year effective in July so now he must register for life. One thing that I'm afraid of is that our local free newspaper prints the registry every year.  Last year his name was not yet in the Sheriff's database to be picked up by the paper.

It is frustrating that there is no regard for personal privacy rights for the offender but there is also no thought to privacy of the family, let alone the victim.  I, of course, don't want neighbors and friends to think poorly of my husband once the information is out, but I worry about what reactions we will have to deal with as a family in small town America.  When we lived in California, he registered but we did not have to worry about public notification.
He also hasn't been able to find employment. He got turned down by a couple of places because he decided to tell the truth, thinking because the offense was so long ago, they might hire him. He also can't lie about it because he would end up getting fired once his information was published in the paper.  Apparently this is legal because it is public record. We're frustrated, angered, scared, bitter, but hopeful.

We have visited the SOHopeful website several times in the last year and were glad to see that there are other families out there that can relate to our situation.  We're hanging tough and hoping for the best.
