Testimonies of Collateral Damage by Megan's Laws

Vietnam Vet and Registrant Loses Job
When I first arrived in Texas, I applied for work before I was required to register with the Sheriff's department so my information wasn't yet up on the website.

I was able to gain employment with a state agency here and worked there for a year. I was also able to collect VSI from my 15 years of active service in the US Navy. That service included Vietnam era service as well as service during Operation Urgent Fury in Grenada and service in the Med immediately following the bombing of the Marine Barracks in Lebanon.

In order to continue collecting my VSI, I had to remain in the Navy Inactive Ready Reserve for 30 years. In order to do that I'd reenlist every 6 years. I was due to reenlist April of 2003 and needed only to find an officer in any branch of service, active or reserve status. Reenlisting did not require a background check.

I asked a fellow employee at the state agency who was a captain in the Army Reserve. He did a background check without informing me. When he called me into his office he explained that he routinely did background checks on those he was going to reenlist that were not in his command to "get a baseline of the person's character." Another excuse he gave was that he heard it "through the grapevine" that I was an RSO. In either case he destroyed my VSI income by having me thrown out of the IRR. As if that wasn't enough, he then told the executive director of the agency.

On February 6th of last year I was called into the director's office. There was a detective from the campus police present. My employment was terminated, I was escorted to my office and watched by both the director and the detective. A criminal trespass warning was given me and I was driven home by the detective with my belongings.

When I tried to collect unemployment it was denied since it was considered misconduct on my part because I didn't disclose the conviction on my application.

So, I have been out of work for a year. My wife has been as much a victim of my RSO status as I am. She was forced to take a second job because I cannot find work here. She works for the federal government and is fearful that they will find out about my status because that could cost her her security clearance which is necessary in the performance of her duties.

Anyone convicted in Texas or considering moving to Texas should consider relocating somewhere else. Texas is horrendous in it's vindictive and vengeful RSO laws. Hitler would be proud with the way people here treat RSOs. If my wife weren't vested in her position we would sell of our goods and leave.

Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson was a co-author of the Senate Amber Alert Bill that was recently passed. Many people don't know that a clause was included in that bill that requires lifetime supervision for first time sex offenses. She pushed that bill and at the time she urged that the merits of the bill should be ignored and the bill passed because it was important to the safety of the children. This came right after the recovery of that girl who was kidnapped last year I think by that nutcase. I can't remember her name. Needless to say, the merits of the bill were ignored and it passed to the detriment of us all.

The more cases that the mainstream media can push into the public's eye about sex offenses and child molestation while not emphasizing the fact that a large majority are first time offences the more they aid in maintaining the myth that all sex offenders are repeat offenders and we are all pedophiles that are seeking to mutilate and molest minors.

I will be very happy to see her go. She is a menace to democracy and is dedicated to the continued discrimination and persecution of RSOs until they are incarcerated for life or they commit suicide. I'm not exaggerating when I say this. I've heard her speak and listened to her tirades regarding RSOs. She is, in my opinion, Hitler incarnate. If she could put us all in ghettos she would. Sadly, there are too many politicians who feel the same way.

Anyway, I could go on forever about this since I find it so offensive but I've got things I need to do. So I'm going to quit. Take care and thanks for the encouragement.  I light my candles every night.

With sincere appreciation,
- M
